Hello All

I would like to invite you all to stop the Gymnastics area to check out all the amazing skills and routines that are being practiced and designed by my classes. Our focus this past 2 weeks has been on creating a simple movement routine that incorporates a number of essential movement components such as free standing balances, group or partner balances, rolls, and jumps combined in different ways.

Students have been working collaboratively in small teams to bring these rotuines together with the hope of performing next week in front of their peers and everyone is welcome to attend !

Our Past Week

April 20th, 2011 Coach O'Farrell No comments

Hello All

It has been a short yet very eventful week here in ES PE.

My classes have now resumed activities on the field such as striking and catching games, throwing nerf balls, and playing a new game with Grades 1 – 4 called “Burn Ball”. Burn ball uses some of the basic principles of baseball however uses a choice of equipment, 2 batters at the same time, and endless numbers of runners allowed on base to name just a few rules.

Please check in with your student and ask them more about the game.

We also have had a great time cheering on the IASIS Badminton players ! Let’s Go bearcats, Let’s Go !

Enjoy your short break and be sure to stop by the field to check out the action.

Hello All

Just thought I would write a quick note to bring you up to speed on where we have been getting active and what we have been doing !

All classes ECLC through Grade 4 have been working very hard in the pool on their competitive strokes, water safety and survival techniques, and also discussing the various processes involved in survival and rescue, what roles they would play in this, and how they would act if suddenly placed in such a situation. We have also been identifying water hazards or dangers that may lurk in and around our houses and ways that we could minimize our risks.

We still have two days left in the water so Mum’s and Dad’s if you are in school for International Day this Friday stop off poolside !

From ES PE.

Thank-you to the many parents that joined us on Sports Day last Friday. Your presence and your willingness to either participate or assist was greatly appreciated. Thank-you to our official parent photographers on the day: Mary Lim-Lopez, Paul Denver, Marjan Paas, Frances Capua, Wendy Worley and Tess Haynie. If parents have photos they would like to share with the classes or the PE department then please contact your classroom teacher. We also welcome constructive feedback from the day and ask that you take the time to e-mail us ( pekina@ismanila.org) or comment through the PE teachers blogs. We use the feedback from parents, students and teachers each year to make improvements and value your input at this time.

Sports day is a celebration of an active lifestyle. A whole day devoted to physical activity as opposed to onscreen activity! Sports Day reminds us that physical activity provides opportunities for social interaction, self expression, health, challenge and enjoyment. The importance of sportsmanship will continue in all activities we do in physical education. Sportsmanship allows us to play competitively and still enjoy being active whether we win or lose. Sports day reminds us as parents just how much fun it can be to be active at any age! I hope you all find time each week to be active with your child.

Sportsday latest & and greatest !

February 11th, 2011 Coach O'Farrell No comments

The elementary school annual sports day is now week away! Please join us next Friday February 18th .All families are invited to attend. All children will bring home a program today for ES Sports day . Our focus is understanding that physical activity provides opportunities for health, enjoyment, self expression, challenge and social interaction as well building a sense of community and school spirit for teachers students and their families.
Students will participate as a class in a variety of activities in different venues. We would like parents to assist the supervisor at each activity or participate in the activities with your child. So please come dressed ready to join in the fun! We also need two parents per grade level to take photographs on Sports day to be used in the Closing Ceremony slide shows. If interested please contact Jen Smith smithj@ismanila.org before Sports day to go through the protocols for taking photos.

We encourage students to display good sportsmanship. As parents you can play a significant role in helping your child become a good sport. Here are some ways to help your child develop good sportsmanship and ensure that sports day is a positive experience.

1. Be a good role model for your children. Children learn by example, so show them how to practice good sportsmanship by not always expecting to win. Explain that winning is not always an option, but that it is always appropriate to be a good sport.
2. Good sportsmanship is a side effect of having good character. Teach your children how to interact with their elders, coaches and peers with a positive attitude, one that shows respect for all involved in the game.
3 Healthy competition is great, but make sure to emphasize other aspects of the game. Friendship, skill, exercise and good sportsmanship are major factors that contribute to a successful experience. After games ask your child “Did you enjoy that?” “That looked like fun!” rather than “Did you win?” Remember the number one reason that children consistently give as to why they participate in sport, is to have fun and be with friends. Emphasize this aspect in your post game conversations. We want to convey a love of the game rather than a love of winning so all children will continue to be active, enjoy and play sports throughout their lifetime.
We look forward to seeing you on Sports Day 2011
